Students with learning disabilities in algebra classes face many difficulties. Among them are an inability to apply algorithmic knowledge to novel problems, poor arithmetic skills, and difficulty with the abstract content associated with higher-level mathematics. With this in mind, we explore some of the research on the algebra performance of students with disabilities and reasons for their difficulties. In addition, we discuss pedagogical practices that best serve students with learning disabilities in algebra.
